It is very difficult to accurately trace the exact origin of many of today’s table games. This is because they have usually been influenced by many different games from many different places. In this article we will be discussing a brief history of some of the most famous table games around.

Poker

Poker is generally considered to have developed from the French game called “Poque”. The two games are played in very similar ways and the names also have a similar sound and pronunciation. Many people also believe that the German game of “Pochspiel” is also largely responsible for the game of poker as we know it today. The German game also requires a certain amount of bluffing.

Blackjack

Blackjack is also thought to have originated in France. It travelled to America after the French revolution. It is called Blackjack because the French game was played in such a way that the player got a big free bonus if the first two cards dealt to them were the Jack or Spades and an Ace of Spades. While the modern game of blackjack awards a big bonus if a Jack and Ace of any suit is dealt to a player, the name stands as testament to the history and origin of this game.

Roulette

There is a slight disagreement as to the origin of the game of Roulette. Some people argue that the game originated in China while others believe that the game originated in France. The word “roulette” is actually French for “small wheel”. A French mathematician is believed to have invented the small wheel in his search for perpetual motion in the 1600’s.

There are two versions of the game. There is the double zero version that is currently in use in America and then there is a single zero version of the game that is used in some countries in Europe. The double zero version actually sways the odds to favour the house so it is generally considered best to play the single zero version of the game.
